Relating Human Activities and Biological Resources in Riparian Habitats of Western Texas

چکیده
--This paper discusses the recreational and wildlife values of riparian habitats along the Rio Grande in western Texas (from El Paso to Del Rio). Several human activities have the potential or have in fact impacted on riparian resources in this region. These include: (1) irrigation diversions and stream channelization which greatly alter rates and amounts of water flow; (2) land flooding resulting from reservoir construction; (3) land clearing for purposes of cultivation to increase agriculture production; (4) overgrazing by domestic livestock; (5) intro ductions of exotic plants and fishes; (6) increases in human recreation activity (floating, camping, hunting, and trapping); and (7) pesticide buildups which have accumulated as a result of drainage and erosion from nearby fields. Contract research with the National Park Service at Big Bend National Park and Amistad Recreation Area focused on outdoor recreation and grazing impacts and findings are reported elsewhere. This paper seeks to place these impacts into broader land use perspective so that riparian resources can be more effectively managed in western Texas.

Riparian landscapes are usually defined as ecotones or corridors between terres trial and aquatic realms (Malanson 1993). In spite of their limited areal extent, riparian ecosystems are essentia...
متن کاملHabitat Selection by Juvenile Black-Capped Vireos Following Independence from Parental Care
If differences in ecological requirements result in juvenile birds using different habitats from breeding birds, then habitat management to protect those birds must protect both breeding and postbreeding habitats. We examined habitat selection by juvenile black-capped vireos (Vireo atricapilla) following their independence from parental care, in 2010–2013 on Fort Hood Military Reservation in ce...
متن کاملThe impacts of anthropogenic sound on marine mammals in the Persian Gulf; current status and need for future research
Abstract Sound generating human activities so-called “anthropogenic sound” have increased ambient sound levels considerably in aquatic habitats that are markedly diverse in time and space. Sound generating human activities is now recognized as a potential driver of environmental changes in marine habitats. Iran has 750 km coastline along the Caspian Sea located in the north and around 2250 km ...
متن کاملGroundwater Provides and Receives Hydrologic System Services.
The concept of Environmental or Ecologic System Services (ESS) is well established in the technical, social science, and policy literatures, and is useful for assessing economic and/or social values of natural resources, and identifying potential impacts of planned or proposed management decisions. The ESS concept has been applied widely to water resources and aquatic habitats, for example, val...
